Kenya AA Tharaka Nithi (2023)
About This Coffee
The Region
The growing area is along the Mt Kenya Tourist circuit and shares land with the eastern route for climbers of Mt Kenya. The coffee farming area spreads over the eastern slopes of the mountain - the second highest mountain in Africa - and next to Mt Kenya forest. The coffee zone has deep valleys through which some of the major tributaries for the river Tana flow. To the east is the arid and semi-arid land that forms part of Matejwa National reserve and the Meru National Park.
This is also the area that the first coffee plants were grown by African Kenyans in 1935. The region is famous for the Chogoria PCEA Mission Hospital, Chuka university, and the internationally renowned Chuka drummers.
The Process
The coffee is wet processed, where the fully ripe cherries are:
• Pulped
• Fermented for 12 - 48 hours (depending on climatic conditions)
• Washed
• Dried slowly over 2 - 3 weeks on raised African beds until the moisture content is reduced to 10-12%.
The coffee is then processed at Othaya dry mill where it is rested in parchment for 3 weeks before being hulled, cleaned and graded by bean size. Finally, the coffee is carefully handpicked before being bagged in GrainPro for export from Mombasa.
