About This Coffee

This community Lot is produced by 60 smallholder farming families living across the neighbouring hills of Mparamirundi, Nyanza Tuburi and Gitemezi, in the northern highlands of Burundi, today part of Butanyerera Province. Although each hill contributes only a modest volume of coffee, together they represent a closely connected farming community with similar growing conditions, traditional agricultural practices and a shared commitment to producing high-quality Red Bourbon coffee.

These farmers work with Cafex, a project launched by a Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population.

This lot is milled and exported by Ikawa Nziza which began in 2013 as a partnership between the owners of Cafex mill and Schluter (Covoya Europe), specifically aimed at building and promoting the specialty coffee production in Burundi. Ikawa Nziza’s mill is the first purpose-built specialty drymill in Burundi, situated at altitude and designed to cater for high-quality microlot coffees.

The Producers

Cafex was launched by a Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population. Cafex has developed a profitable business model for all parties based on mutual participation with growers.

Throughout the production season, Cafex works closely with producers by providing technical support on pruning, natural fertilisation, coffee leaf rust management and selective harvesting. These extension services have become particularly valuable following recent outbreaks of coffee leaf rust, helping farmers improve both productivity and coffee quality. All producers receive payment electronically through local microfinance institutions, providing secure transactions while facilitating access to savings and agricultural credit. Coffee income also provides an important source of household revenue, helping many families invest in school fees and educational materials for their children.

Cherries from Mparamirundi, Nyanza Tuburi and Gitemezi are received and processed together as a dedicated community lot, preserving the identity of these neighbouring hills while ensuring complete traceability from cherry reception through export. By bringing together three small but highly committed coffee-growing communities, this lot highlights another expression of the remarkable diversity found within the Shikankoni supply area.

The Process

Ripe coffee cherries are first sorted by flotation to remove floaters and low-density fruit, then hand-selected to eliminate any remaining immature or defective cherries. The selected cherries are pulped and transferred to fermentation tanks, where the mucilage is naturally broken down. Following fermentation, the parchment is thoroughly washed in clean water and density graded through washing channels before being transferred to raised drying beds for slow, even drying.
