About This Coffee

This fully washed lot is from smallholder producers on Benga Hill in Kayanza. These farmers work with Cafex, a project launched by a Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population.

This community lot is produced by 207 smallholder farming families living on Benga Hill, one of the distinctive coffee-growing communities supplying Shikankoni Washing Station in Kayanza Province, Burundi. Benga was selected as a dedicated community lot because it has consistently produced some of the highest quality cherries delivered to the washing station, allowing the unique identity of this community to be preserved from harvest to export.

Coffee is cultivated between 1,600 and 1,700 metres above sea level on small family farms where Red Bourbon coffee grows alongside bananas, beans and other food crops under the shade of Grevillea and native trees. These diversified farming systems reflect traditional Burundian agriculture while contributing to healthy coffee production and household food security.

This lot is milled and exported by Ikawa Nziza which began in 2013 as a partnership between the owners of Cafex mill and Schluter (now Covoya Europe), specifically aimed at building and promoting the specialty coffee production in Burundi. Ikawa Nziza’s mill is the first purpose-built specialty drymill in Burundi, situated at altitude and designed to cater for high-quality microlot coffees.

The Producers

Cafex was launched by a Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population. Cafex has developed a profitable business model for all parties based on mutual participation with growers.

The Cafex station has positively impacted families in the region. The town where the washing station is located is undeveloped and the implementation of the Cafex station allows men and women of the town to find a job that gives them a better salary to improve their quality of life. Families who have a seasonal job have the opportunity to receive an extra income that gives them access to medical care or allows them to buy books in order to send their children to school. Whereas many coffee producers have to wait many months to receive final payment for their harvest, Cafex has introduced a weekly payment to growers, with no delay. It allows them to have a regular income throughout the harvest coffee season.

Throughout the season, Cafex provides technical support on pruning, natural fertilisation, disease management and selective harvesting. Following the coffee leaf rust outbreak experienced in previous seasons, these extension services have become particularly important in supporting farm productivity and coffee quality. All producers receive payment electronically through local microfinance institutions, providing secure transactions while facilitating access to savings and agricultural credit. Coffee income represents an important source of household revenue and helps many families invest in education, including school fees and school supplies.

The Process

Ripe coffee cherries are first sorted by flotation to remove floaters and low-density fruit, then hand-selected to eliminate any remaining immature or defective cherries. The selected cherries are pulped and transferred to fermentation tanks, where the mucilage is naturally broken down. Following a 15hr fermentation, the parchment is thoroughly washed in clean water and density graded through washing channels before being transferred to raised drying beds for slow, even drying for an average of 22 days.
